These 8 road projects begin this week across Michigan

Michigan’s Department of Transportation is preparing to start more than 90 new projects that will close anywhere from a single lane or ramp to entire roads throughout the state.

New construction work includes closures on Jefferson Avenue, Ford Road, and I-75 in Wayne County, as well as I-96 in West Michigan, U.S. 127 near Jackson, and U.S. 31 up in Benzie County.

Below is a summary of some road projects underway this week in Michigan.

Jefferson Avenue in Detroit

All lanes of Jefferson Avenue (M10) from Bates Street to Griswold Street are scheduled to close for about a week beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 30. The John C Lodge Freeway from Larned to Griswold Street and the ramp from Jefferson to the Lodge Freeway will also be closed.

The closures are among several road projects around downtown Detroit this summer that may cause added congestion. This week’s work will be followed by a closure of the I-375 Service Drive from Larned Street to Jefferson Avenue the first week of June.

Ford Road in Wayne County

A three-week road construction project is set to begin Tuesday on Ford Road (M-153) in Canton. The work will include single-lane closures in both directions between Sheldon Road and Canton Center.

Work is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with an estimated conclusion date of Tuesday, June 20.

M-95 in Dickinson County

Construction on about six miles of M-95 begins Tuesday with an estimated end date in early August. Workers are planning to resurface the road from M69 (east junction) north to M69 (west junction).

The state is investing $2.7 million into the project, which will include asphalt milling and resurfacing, asphalt shoulder widening, shoulder aggregate, and pavement markings.

Drivers should expect intermittent single-lane closures.

I-96 in Kent County

Eastbound traffic on I-96 will be without its left lane for nearly three miles from I-196 to Cascade Road beginning early Tuesday morning and concluding Thursday afternoon.

U.S. 127 in Jackson County

Drivers traveling south on U.S. 127 toward Jackson may experience traffic slowdowns beginning Tuesday, with road work closing the left lane between Springport Road and Parnall Road.

Construction is scheduled to begin around 7 a.m. Tuesday and conclude by Friday evening.

I-75 in Wayne County

About a seven-mile stretch of southbound I-75 will lose its two right lanes to construction beginning Friday morning, June 2, and stretching throughout the weekend.

The road maintenance work will narrow traffic from Sibley Road south to Huron River Drive in the area of Woodhaven.

U.S. 131 in Kalkaska

Crews will begin working to improve a pair of U.S. 131 intersections in Kalkaska on Tuesday. The $541,000 project aims to modernize traffic signals at the highway’s intersections with 3rd Street and Elm Street.

Work is scheduled to run into mid-July, and to include new concrete curbs and gutters, sidewalk ramps built to ADA standards, and new pavement markings. Throughout the project, drivers can expect lane closures and traffic regulators.

U.S. 31 in Benzie County

Tuesday begins a one-month closure of a single lane of traffic in both directions of U.S. 31 from Center Line Road to M115 in Benzie County.
